The statue of The Abandoned Soldier took the sculptor James Napier four months from its initial conception to its installation in Trafalgar Square. The fragmented appearance of The Abandoned Soldier endeavours to portrays a soldier physically and mentally broken from the effects of combat. It was also important for the statue to embody the emotions of sadness and despair, whilst revealing his inner strength and dignity. The sculptor hopes his statue emotes all these feelings and connects with the soldiers it is intended to represent. In making this statue, the sculptor wished to create a tangible symbol to raise awareness and money for this cause
